The Marine Corps' Blount Island facility in Jacksonville, Florida, is about to plug berthed prepositioning ships into the shore grid. Military Sealift Command estimates shore power could cut the cost of powering a ship at the pier by 20 to 30 per cent; the project cost about $4.5 million and serves one berth.
The Port of Savannah handled 504,015 twenty-foot equivalent units in September, a record for the month and 3.7 per cent more than a year earlier, led by imports. Georgia's other big port, Brunswick, handled 22 per cent less roll-on, roll-off cargo, the ships that carry vehicles and machinery.
Spot rates for a 40-foot container from the Far East to the US West Coast were $8,346 on 1 October, Xeneta said, up 344 per cent since 28 February. To the East Coast they were $11,523. The same box to northern Europe cost $3,726, and that price has been falling since July. Xeneta's chief analyst says the US rates have now peaked, but will not collapse.

IMF PortWatch recorded 78 transits of the strait between 1 and 20 September, 19 of them tankers. In the same 20 days of 2025 it recorded 1,731.
Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline after drone attacks last week, closing the main route its oil had used to avoid the Strait of Hormuz. Over the weekend the Houthis took Perim Island and with it control of the Bab al-Mandab, the strait that cargoes loaded at the pipeline's Red Sea terminal must pass to reach Asia. Brent rose toward $108 on Monday.
Iran's security council secretary says a restricted maritime zone will be declared within days, running from the US blockade line through Hormuz into the Gulf, with uncoordinated vessels placed on a list affecting their insurance and future passage. American forces have already redirected 87 ships. A master cannot satisfy both.
