The Kennedy Center shut its main building to the public at about 4.30 on Tuesday afternoon, hours after its board voted to close it for two years. Guards stood at the doors. Staff were seen hugging through the glass. The Honors and the Mark Twain Prize move elsewhere, the REACH stays open, and everything that filled the building for the rest of the year does not.
A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that the Kennedy Center cannot install memorials to President Trump or rename itself without Congress. Hours later the board he chairs voted to close the main building immediately for a renovation expected to last two years. The president said the work will not happen at all unless the naming ruling is overturned.
The Kennedy Center's board has told a federal court the institution cannot meet payroll or routine maintenance "within a matter of weeks" and could close as soon as Tuesday. A 57-page internal report projects $124 million of a budgeted $220 million in revenue. Internal documents describe restoring President Trump's name to the building, the subject of a lawsuit, as the only way to avoid bankruptcy.
San Diego restored arts funding, and two of the city's institutions had already cut staff. The Institute of Contemporary Art reduced headcount by 42 percent across August; the San Diego Museum of Art laid off eleven. The ICA's deficit had doubled between 2023 and 2024, before any of it.
The South Carolina Arts Commission funded nearly every organisation on its list and declined two, both with an LGBTQ+ focus. The stated reason changed between the first explanation and the second, and the second one is unreviewable by design.
Amateur and semi-professional companies were supposed to be the most fragile part of the performing arts. They have proved the most durable, for reasons that have very little to do with the work on stage.
