The Senate's Permitting Deal Would Give Opponents 150 Days to Sue. It Would Also Send Data Centers Their Grid Bill.

The leaders of the two Senate committees that oversee energy and the environment released a 400-page permitting bill on 30 September. It would set two-year deadlines for environmental reviews, give opponents 150 days to sue, make it harder for any administration to block a whole class of energy projects and require data centers to pay all of their transmission costs. The Senate does not return until after the election.

The House Voted a Third Time to End the Iran War, and Is Still About Seventy Votes Short

The House passed a war powers resolution 220 to 204 late on Tuesday, directing the president to remove US forces from hostilities with Iran. Seven Republicans crossed. It is the third time the chamber has voted this way since June, and none of the three has reached the president's desk. The Congressional Budget Office put the war's cost at $2bn to $3bn a month.

More than 700 women are on the ballot for Congress and governor this year, a record. In 36 congressional races both candidates are women. That second number is the one that describes something new, because it is where the variable everybody measures drops out of the contest entirely.
