More than 400 pages of Defense Department contracts with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI were obtained through freedom-of-information litigation. The documents were disclosable when they were signed. What separated them from the public was not classification but the cost of asking twice.
The embargo gave reporters time to do the work properly and gave sources control of the clock. One half of that arrangement has quietly stopped being delivered.
Outlets that spent a century competing are pooling coverage of the beats none of them can staff alone. The arrangement works because the thing they are sharing was never what made them distinct.
Declared obsolete for two decades, the press release has instead become the load-bearing document of the information economy, feeding newsrooms, databases and now AI systems.
